Arran Geopark
Arran has been high on the list of must-go sites for geologists - in fact many of them will have spent some of theis student days here on field excursions. It began in the 18th century when James Hutton the father of modern geology - gathered much of the field data to support his seminal work - The Theory of the Earth - which he presented as a series of papers to the Edinburgh Geological Society in 1785. The uncorformity pictured right was identified by Hutton during that time, and earlier than his more famous unconformity at Siccar Point on the East Coast.
Arran Geopark promotes and conserves Arran’s spectacular and globally important geology. Geological information is available at three interpretation centres and on six self-guided walks, five of which are now available. Click here to visit the Geopark website for more information. |
